Our
History
The first Richard Teeter moved to the booming canal town of Hawley
in 1849. He hoped to use his skills as a cabinet maker to establish
a business and support his family. By the time he passed away in
1896, he had raised that family and laid the foundation for a
furniture store and funeral business which both continue to be
operated by his descendants more then 150 years after he began.
On the property that forms the corner of Main Ave. and Church St. in
Hawley, Richard first constructed a two story building for a
workshop and store. In a few years this was expanded with two three
story additions. Teeters woodworking skills soon led him to a new
business venture--the funeral business. After all, the man who
could build a fine piece of furniture was also able to produce good,
sturdy caskets.
In the years since, business operations have continued on that same
corner with the first Richard being succeeded by his sons: Richard,
Charlie and George. The third Richard Teeter then operated the
businesses with his wife Helen until their sons, the present
proprietors, Dick and Kim Teeter, assumed ownership in 1965.
Ninety years after the death of the founding Richard, 1986 brought
another end and new beginning….. A disastrous fire leveled his
original furniture store. This was followed, in less than a year,
by the construction of a larger and more functional building complex
on the same location. This new facility, coupled with the fifth
generation--Julie Teeter-Seiler and Jake Teeter, children of the
current partners- assures the continuation of the Teeters tradition
of quality, value and service to the Lake Region community well into
the 21st Century.
